It has made a huge difference if the speed of our daily cleaning routine as it is so much more thorough than a broom and dust pan on the hardwood and switches to rugs and back again seamlessly. We absolutely LOVE this vacuum cleaner, and use it daily. For us right now, a wipe down of everything inside and out with clorox wipes works great, including wiping where the belt is as pet dander/hair and bird dust/feathers builds up. We also have 7 Budgies in an extra, extra large aviary and are fixing to take in a pair of cat siblings. Now we have only one dog, a pittie girl, and they have exceptionally short hair (less than 1/2") if you have dogs that have longer hair then maintenance on the vacuum should probably be more often.
Aside from making sure the level is set high enough for the floor it is on we also clean it once a month, hair and stuff builds up.
